It was reported that after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his plan to settle immigrants who came to England illegally in Rwanda, Denmark also started talks with Rwanda to send asylum seekers out of the country.

"Our dialogue with the Rwandan government includes a mechanism for the transfer of asylum seekers," Danish Immigration Minister Mattias Tesfaye told the media, adding that the agreement aims to provide a more dignified approach than the criminal network of traffickers.

Noting that Denmark has not yet made an agreement with Rwanda, Tesfaye stated that a meeting will be held with the immigration spokespersons in the parliament on April 28. The government needs parliamentary support for a potential deal with Rwanda.

Denmark, which has implemented increasingly harsh immigration policies in recent years, passed a law last year allowing asylum seekers who came to Denmark to move to asylum centers in a partner country. The law in question was criticized by human rights defenders, the United Nations (UN) and the European Commission.

Last year, Denmark contacted countries inside and outside the European Union for a potential asylum deal, including Tunisia and Ethiopia, and signed a diplomatic agreement with Rwanda on asylum and political issues.
