Once finished, Krak des Chevaliers was one of the key tourist attractions in the French Levant.

Looters have broken into one of the world's best-preserved Crusader castles, Crac des Chevaliers, and ruins in the ancient city of Palmyra were damaged. 

The outer walls of the Krak des Chevaliers, a Crusader fortress in Homs, were marred by rocket fire. 

One of the weakest points of any castle was its main gate, and much thought and effort were put into that of Krak des Chevaliers to ensure the castle's defensive integrity. 

The conflict has affected all six World Heritage sites in Syria, notably the Ancient City of Aleppo and the Crac des Chevaliers, and there is evidence that they have been used for military purposes, subjected to direct shelling and targeted explosions.  

Or the famous Krak des Chevaliers, which is considered one of the most important preserved medieval military architectures in the world. 

In French Mandate Syria, too, the French forcibly relocated the villages at Palmyra and inside the Crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers so that they could excavate further and preserve the ruins.
