Billionaire Elon Musk on Sunday described the American media as "racist", after a number of newspapers decided to stop publishing the "Dilbert" video tapes, whose creator indicated that the black population constituted a "hate group".

The American media has for a very long time shown racism towards non-white people, and today it has become racist towards whites and Asians," the Tesla chief tweeted.

"The same thing happened in colleges and high schools that are attended by members of the elite in the United States. Maybe they should try to stop being so racist."

The creator of "Dilbert" Scott Adams, in one of his episodes on YouTube on Wednesday, described the black population as a "hate group", stressing his rejection of "any link that brings him together with them."

"Based on the way things are going now, the best advice I can give white people is to stay away from black people," said Adams, who rose to fame during the 1990s with comic strips about the business world.

Adams was commenting on a survey conducted by Rasmussen Reports, which showed, in his words, that few blacks surveyed consider it "okay to be white."

On Friday evening, the USA Today Network, which runs hundreds of US newspapers, announced that it would "refrain from publishing" these videos "because of discriminatory comments made by the author of the stories."

The Washington Post reported Saturday that it will stop publishing "Dilbert" "in light of Scott Adams' recent statements," even if it is too late to withdraw the weekend editions.

Other media outlets that decided not to publish "Dilbert" included The Plain Dealer and the M-Life Media Group, which operates eight newspapers in Michigan.

Elon Musk and Scott Adams are controversial because of their views on social issues.

Since Musk's acquisition of Twitter, hate speech has increased across the social network, according to researchers. Musk reactivated the accounts of personalities who were banned on the platform for adopting hate speech. As for his electric car company, Tesla, it has faced several lawsuits due to alleged racist practices
