Proofreading & EditingI am often asked if an editor is essential to the success of a book and my short answer is always "No." That may sound strange coming from a guy who earns a living as an editor, and a salesman's mouth would probably fall open. But I am not a salesman, and I am not trying to fool anyone. Is an editor always necessary? Absolutely not. But it's also not necessary for a lawyer to wear a suit or to hire a make-up artist and hairstylist before you go on television. However, that suit lends the lawyer credibility (can you imagine what the jury's response would be if he showed up in sweatpants, sandals, and a tee-shirt?) and the make-up artist hides the blemishes and brings out the best aspects of your face. That's really all an editor does. Nothing damages credibility like bad grammar, poor punctuation, and frequent misspellings. If you are selling something, a reader might ask, "If they care so little about their punctuation, what makes me think they'll care about the

I'm a full time copywriter, and James has been my editor for over a year now. We just haven't always used Guru. James is always very throrough and accurate. He has a good eye and catches all errors. I give him my larger projects so he can catch any typos and formatting errors that I don't see, and he has never missed one. In fact, he always goes above and beyond, noting things that can be improved or changed. He's definitely a well trained and professional editor who has the ability to take a piece of work, correct it AND improve upon it. I would recommend him to any employer on here. He may be new to the Guru system, but for over a year now, he's been my saving grace when I need an extra set of eyes for my projects. If you want to know more about what he's done for me in the way of editing and proofreading or have any questions, feel free to email me at tina@copyscribe.net for a more formal reference.
