In a First, Netflix to Launch a Mobile Game and TV Series From the Same Franchise

Netflix is tapping the Exploding Kittens franchise, which started off as a card game. The mobile game arrives on Netflix next month while the TV series launches next year

Netflix has decided to take a popular card game, Exploding Kittens, and offer it both as a mobile game and an upcoming animated TV series.

The deal represents the first time Netflix is launching a mobile game and TV series from the same franchise, the company announced on Monday. So it could be a sign of things to come for the streaming service, which is trying to find ways to keep and grow its subscriber base.

“We couldn’t think of a better game to build a universe around than Exploding Kittens, one of the most inventive, iconic and original games of this century,” said Netflix’s head of adult animation, Mike Moon.

In case you don’t know, Exploding Kitten is one of the most popular projects ever crowdfunded on Kickstarter. The card game, which can be played with two to five people, has often been described as a mix of Uno and Russian Roulette Exploding Kittens was popular enough that it became a $1.99 mobile game in 2016. Now Netflix will bring an exclusive special edition of the game to the streaming platform next month The game will not only be free to Netflix subscribers, but also include some special features. “Fans will enjoy two new exclusive cards: Radar, which reveals to players the position of the Exploding Kitten closest to the top of the card deck; and Flip Flop, which reverses the order of the cards in the deck,” Netflix said The company also plans on customizing the game’s mechanics and cards around the upcoming TV show, which is set to release next year. Netflix says the show will feature God and the Devil battling it out on Earth, as two chunky house cats. The creators of the animated series King of the Hill, Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, have both signed on as executive producers
