Israel-Gaza war live updates: Israel advances into southern Gaza; ‘nowhere safe to go,’ U.N. says

Israel’s military is advancing into southern Gaza in a push that ushers in a new phase of its war against Hamas — and an increasingly perilous situation for Palestinian civilians who have few safe places left to flee. Israel says Hamas leaders who planned the Oct. 7 attack are sheltering in the south. Satellite imagery showed dozens of armored vehicles about 1½ miles north of Khan Younis, the largest city in the south. “For people ordered to evacuate, there is nowhere safe to go and very little to survive on,” a spokesman for U.N. Secretary General António Guterres said. A territory-wide communications blackout also hampered the humanitarian response overnight.

Here’s what to know

  • Telecommunications providers reported disruption of all communications and internet services in Gaza on Monday evening. Paltel, one of the providers, said early Tuesday that services were being restored in some regions.
  • At least 15,899 people have been killed in Gaza, and 42,000 have been wounded since the war began, the Gaza Health Ministry said. At least 1,200 people were killed in Israel during the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.
  • Young Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli custody during the seven-day pause in fighting described harsh treatment in Israeli jails. The majority of those freed last week had never been convicted of a crime; many never had a day in court. And they knew little about the diplomatic negotiations that led to their release or the Oct. 7 attacks, The Washington Post reports.
  • The long-running corruption trial of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resumed Monday, after officials declared the emergency situation at Israel’s courts to be over. In 2019, he became Israel’s first prime minister to be indicted while in office when he was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust.
  • As airstrikes continue throughout southern Gaza, “another wave of displacement is underway, and the humanitarian situation worsens by the hour,” warned Thomas White, director of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees in the enclave.

Civilians are being instructed to use a narrow road parallel to the beach as they move south between Khan Younis and Rafah.

  • Israeli forces shot dead five Palestinians in the West Bank on Monday, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health based in Ramallah.

One person was killed and several were injured when clashes broke out Monday after an Israeli raid on the Qalandia refugee camp , according to local news reports.

  • The Palestinian Health Ministry said a 32-year-old was fatally shot by Israeli soldiers in the camp, which is near the main checkpoint between Ramallah and Jerusalem and next to Israel’s West Bank barrier.

  • The Palestinian Red Crescent said 22 people were injured by Israeli gunfire and were transferred to the Ramallah Government Hospital and the Palestine Medical Complex for further care.
