I am a Lighting Design Engineer, with over 10 years of experience of doing lighting design.
I work on Dialux, Dialux Evo, Relux, Autocad. I have worked on all sorts of Lighting Design projects, Residential, Commercial, Office, Hospitality, Warehouses. I have deep knowledge of concepts as a lighting design engineer.
As a Lighting Design engineer, I am giving an outline about what approach I would follow, for whatever Lighting Design Project I am assigned.
a) The first step will be importing Auto CAD Dwg in Dialux/Dialux Evo
b) Properly scaled modeling will be done from dwg in Dialux Evo, complete with furniture and Textures, cove ceilings
c) Now the real Lighting design part will start. Where i will be assigning standards to each part of the project. I will use EN 12464 -1 and 2 or IESNA standard (or national standard if required, like SIS EN 12665). Then each room of the project will be assigned a standard by going into Dialux Spaces.
d) Once standards are assigned, to our rooms/spaces whether it is an Industrial, office or residential project, the next step of Luminaire/Lamp selection will follow.
e) I will wisely select the Lamp/Light sources to be used, for. eg if Green landscape/garden has to be illuminated in a project, I will use High Pressure Mercury Vapor lamp as that will make the green landscape look rich and vibrant. (but as you will be providing the Lighting, i will use them)
f) For arranging the light fixtures in our each room/space. I will follow a layered approach of lighting, ambient, task and accent lighting. Target Lux levels and uniformity will be used as per the standard applicable for that area. Light scenes will be use as per requirements.
g) I will add calculation surfaces besides default work plane, like UGR, vertical calculation surfaces for cupboards
h) Finally lighting simulation will be Initiated. And the results will be checked on criteria of Average Lux, Uniformity and UGR (< 19 in most cases).
i) I will check the Luminous efficacy of our project, if we are getting a good Luminous efficacy of 75-100 Lumes/wattor even more.
j) Then finally i will check if the lighting power density(Lumens/ftsq or sqm of our project has met the energy standards of ASHRAE 90.1 or other similar standards.
k) So if all our results, average lux, Uniformity, UGR, Luminous efficacy and Lighting power density, are good, then I will handover the complete Lighting Calculation results/ UGR calculations/ Project report/documentation/ Ray trace shots, Dialux evo files as final deliverables for each project.
