What is mental retardation

Mental retardation, or what is also known as mental disability or intellectual disability (in English: Intellectual Disability), is the failure of the brain to develop properly, as the brain does not perform functions normally compared to the mental and adaptive functions of others who are not affected.

If a person is mentally retarded or mentally handicapped, he may have an intelligence level below the normal rate, that is, with regard to mental abilities. This is in addition to the weakness or lack of skills related to the practice of daily life activities, and the weak ability to think and adapt, as people with mental retardation learn skills, but at a slower rate than others, and there are skills that they may not be able to learn, and children with mental retardation may appear childish.

The difference between mental retardation and mental retardation

Mental retardation and mental retardation can be considered synonymous terms that both denote a level of intelligence below the normal range and a slowness in learning skills.

Among the symptoms of mental retardation is also that the person with mental retardation has weakness in each of the following:

Mental functions, i.e. the ability to make decisions, solve problems, and learn.

Adaptive behaviors, which are behaviors of self-care, communication and interaction with others.

 Classification of mental retardation

Severe cases of mental retardation are diagnosed in children at birth, while less severe cases may not be diagnosed unless the patient has problems reaching developmental goals common to those of his age. Most cases of mental retardation are diagnosed before the age of 18.

Mental retardation can be classified into four levels:

 Mild intellectual disability.

 Moderate intellectual disability.

 Severe intellectual disability.

 Profound intellectual disability.

In some cases, the level of mental retardation may be classified into a category called Unspecified intellectual disability or a category called Other intellectual disability.

Mental retardation is associated with both lower intelligence (IQ) and problems adjusting to daily life. This is in addition to the possibility of being associated with social, physical, educational and speech disabilities.

degrees of mental retardation

There are many signs and symptoms of mental retardation, and when they appear depends on their severity. Some of them appear while the child is still an infant, and some of them do not appear until the child reaches the stage of entering school.
