Protesters in Iraq storm the parliament

$25/hr Starting at $25

An Iraqi security source said that Sadr's supporters entered the fortified Green Zone, and video clips showed Sadr's supporters inside the corridors of the Iraqi parliament. Supporters of the Sadrist movement moved at the walls of the presidential district in Baghdad, in protest against the current political situation and in refusal to name the "coordinating framework" parties, naming Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani as a candidate for prime minister. Eyewitnesses and sources told "Al-Ain News" that "hundreds of Sadrist supporters have moved since this morning to the main gathering place at Tahrir Square towards Al-Jumhuriya Bridge leading to the presidential area, whose entrances were closed with concrete barriers." The protesters succeeded in storming the Green Zone and headed to the parliament building, which is scheduled to meet soon to ratify the nomination of Al-Sudani as prime minister. With reports of injuries among the protesters, leaders in the Sadrist movement held the political forces responsible for protecting the demonstrators. For his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi called on supporters of the Sadrist movement to remain peaceful during their protests in the vicinity of the Green Zone. The Prime Minister of Iraq also directed the security forces to protect the demonstrators, after reports of injuries among their ranks. Ten months after the early legislative elections in October 2021, Iraq is witnessing complete political paralysis, as the country is still without a new president and a new government.
