PS5 Is Finally Getting A Long...

$25/hr Starting at $25

Sony has made an announcement about a new beta test for PS5 going live shortly, and among its additions, it includes something that many players have been requesting since the first day the console launched: 1440p support.

1440p support has been a coveted option for many players opting to use certain monitors or TVs to play their PS5, and now that Sony itself has moved into the monitor business, it seems it was time to unleash this feature at last. Here are the details:

1440p HDMI Video Output

  • The PS5 beta introduces support for 1440p HDMI video output, enabling players to choose an additional visual setting on compatible PC monitors and TVs.
  • If the game you’re playing supports 1440p rendering you can experience native 1440p output on your display.
  • Or, if you’re playing a game with a higher native resolution like 4K, then you may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling down to 1440p output.
  • You can check if your HDMI device is compatible by selecting “Test 1440p Output” under “Screen and Video” options within system settings.
  • While this is lower resolution than 4K, many players wanted this option as a middleground as some games will look better using it, depending on your output device. Some in the comments are wondering why this was prioritized instead of 8K, which PS5 claims it can support, but 1440p is probably something that will directly benefit more players.

The 1440p option is not the only change in this upcoming update. It also includes:

    • Gamelists – Where players can organize their games into 15 lists of 100 games each, at max.
    • Compare 3D and Stereo Audio – An easier way to directly compare these two options onscreen.
    • In-Progress Activities – When you resume a game, it will be easier to see where you left off.
    • Request Share Screen – So you can ask your party members to watch their gameplay.
    • Joinable Game – If you join a party and a member is in a game you can also join, a notification will pop up for that option.
    • View New Friends’ Profiles – After accepting a request you can immediately view a friend’s profile.
    • Game Pass Chat – You can now send stickers and voice message to your groups.
  • So all in all this is a pretty significant update, even if the 1440p addition will be the headline. This is about to start being beta tested today, and should roll out wide not too long after, I imagine.
