Russia and Ukraine: Moscow denies target

Russian missiles hit an apartment building and kindergarten complex in central Kiev on Sunday, killing one person and injuring six others, Ukrainian officials said.

This comes as Moscow stepped up its air strikes on Ukraine for the second day in a row in the deadliest attack in months.

Ukraine says "at least 14 missiles were fired into the Kiev area on Sunday, but the strikes extended beyond the capital."

Russia denied targeting the apartment building, noting that "it was a Ukrainian missile that hit the building, not Russian forces."

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that it had not targeted a residential area, but had "bombed a missile production plant, the Artium weapons factory, as a military infrastructure," AFP reported.

She added that the damage to a nearby apartment building was caused by a Ukrainian air defense missile, adding that "damage to the parts of the building as well as the upper part confirms that it was a falling rocket".

"Russian strikes on an area near the centre of the capital early Sunday morning killed one person and injured six, including a seven-year-old girl," Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said.

"Firefighters extinguished a fire in a nine-storey apartment building that was badly damaged in the Shivchenkovsky area, a suburb of kiev, in the centre of the country," ukrainian emergency services said.

A Reuters photographer reported seeing a new large hole next to a kindergarten playground and shattered windows 400 meters from the building. Some of the citizens' storage depots in the area were also completely destroyed.

Earlier on Sunday, Russia announced that it had used high-precision weapons to strike Ukrainian army training centers in the regions of Chernyhev, Gitomir and Lviv, apparently referring to the strikes reported by Ukraine on Saturday.

A Ukrainian Air Force spokesman said that between four and six long-range missiles were fired on Sunday from Russian bombers more than 1,000 kilometres away in the Astrakhan region bordering the Caspian Sea.

The capital Kiev has not been under Russian bombardment since June 5, when a railway repair facility on the outskirts of the capital came under attack. In late April, a radio producer was killed in a raid on the building where she lives.

The historic Shivchenkovsky region is the centre of a range of universities, restaurants and art galleries.

Russian forces abandoned their early advance towards the capital Kiev in the face of fierce resistance from Ukrainian forces backed by sophisticated Western weapons.

Moscow and its loyalist forces focused their offensive on the southern regions and Donbass, an eastern region of luhansk and its neighbour Donetsk, and used heavy artillery strikes in some of the fiercest ground battles in Europe since World War II.
