Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian soldiers in Severodonetsk are fighting "one of the toughest" battles with Russian forces since the beginning of the war, adding that the fate of the entire Donbass region will be decided by the eastern city.

Moscow forces focus their fire on the strategically important industrial center, in order to control large swathes of eastern Ukraine.

After days of intense street battles, Ukrainian officials acknowledged that Russian forces were in control of a large part of Severodonetsk, and that their forces might have to withdraw due to the constant bombardment.

In his evening address to the nation, Zelensky said the battle for the city was "very fierce...and very difficult. It was probably one of the toughest battles of all this war

Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces refocused their offensive on the Donbass region, including Lugansk and Donetsk, after being pushed back from Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine following their invasion in February.

The cities of Severodonetsk and Lyseshansk, separated by a river, were the last areas still under Ukrainian control in Lugansk.

Lyseshansk is still in the hands of the Ukrainians, but is under fierce Russian bombardment.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres added his voice to increasingly dire warnings about the impact of the conflict.

"War threatens people all over the world, unleashing an unprecedented wave of hunger and destitution, leaving behind social and economic chaos," he said

. The fate of Donbass will be determined there in many ways," he added
