Samsung will not abandon Google

Samsung has halted internal plans to change the default search engine on its devices from Google to Bing, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The report stated that the Korean company decided to keep the Google search engine as a default search engine on its browser, which also comes installed by default on various Samsung devices.

According to the American newspaper, Samsung initially thought that changing the default search engine from Google to Bing would not cause much disturbance; Because most of her smartphone users don't use her browser anyway.

Samsung's retraction of its decision comes due to fears of the impact of this on its relationship with Google in the event that its search engine is replaced.

It is not known exactly the reasons that prompted Samsung to consider changing the default search engine in the first place, but this may be due mainly to the recent developments made by Microsoft on the Bing search engine, related to artificial intelligence technologies supported by the GPT-4 model.

On the other hand, Google responded by announcing improvements in its search engine that are also supported by artificial intelligence, in addition to announcing the chatbot Bard, a competitor to ChatGPT and ChatBing.

The Wall Street Journal stressed that Samsung "hasn't completely closed the door" to using Bing as the default search engine in the future.

And the American New York Times had published a report earlier, in which it indicated that Google employees were “shocked” when they were informed that Samsung was considering changing the default search engine to Bing.

It is known that Google annually pays billions of dollars to various companies in order to maintain Google as the default search engine, to maintain the advertising revenues that come from behind the search, as it amounted in 2022 to about $ 162 billion.

It is worth noting that Google pays Samsung annually about 3.5 billion US dollars, and pays Apple annually 20 billion US dollars, in exchange for the presence of the Google search engine by default on their devices.

On the other hand, Microsoft may seek to make Bing the default search engine in other places, such as the Mozilla-developed Firefox browser.
