SMB System conversions & migrations

Since 1987, I have helped numerous small to medium-size businesses (SMB) convert their operations from "the way we've always done it" to more modern systems and platforms - manual to automated system conversions, cross-platform and cross-vendor migrations, and new office systems for start-ups on a budget. I even wrote custom software to automate the blocking of distant-station signals for specific programs on CATV to protect local-broadcaster programming during the early days of the FCC's Syndicated Exclusivity ruling - using a TV studio's old 64-channel matrix switch, CSV downloads from the good folks at TV Guide, a brand-new PC-XT, and Pascal (plus the lead cable-tech's expertise with signal of all types). Each conversion or migration project is unique, and so far I have not had the opportunity to do a specific conversion a second time. As a result, I am able to learn new things very quickly (and teach the skils to others as I learn), and have a solution-centered rather than a finger-pointing approach to problem solving. My most recent challenge for example was a cross-version Joomla migration with breaking changes (1.5 to 2.5), for an online store selling digital downloads which needed to convert to a different shopping-cart, and needed it done Yesterday. Simply upgrading the store would not do, because download sales were no longer supported in the new version of the current cart (Virtuemart to MyMuse). Joomla I already knew from an administrator's perspective; MySQL handles very much like the old IBM System 38; so I only had to learn the MyMuse store (operation and programming), and enough of Virtuemart to understand how to migrate the data. While I do relish the technical challenges of the work itself, I have done enough of these to understand that when a conversion or migration "goes bad" it is generally not due to "technical difficulties". Most of the time, it is because the natural fear of the unknown, and reluctance to change that w
