Turkey and Syria woke up, at dawn Monday, to a devastating earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale.
The death toll from the earthquake has not yet settled, but preliminary estimates indicate that hundreds of people were killed and thousands injured, in addition to the collapse of a large number of buildings and the siege of dozens under the rubble.
The earthquake coincided with a snow storm and heavy rains, which added to the horror of the disaster, as the rescue teams faced difficulties in reaching the victims, especially in northern Syria.
