Federal prosecutors are asking eyewitness questions about Trump's conduct in the process.

The US Department of Justice is conducting a formal criminal investigation into last year's attack on Congress. But no investigation has yet been launched against former President Trump.

After Trump was defeated by Joe Biden in the November 3, 2020 election, a large group attacked the US Congress on January 6, 2021, demanding a change in the election results.

Although Trump has publicly praised the group that attacked the Capitol, he has denied allegations that he played a role in the operation.

According to the American newspaper, the Washington Post, within the scope of the investigation that has begun, an investigation is underway into whether Trump interfered in the election results. Prosecutors are asking eyewitnesses for details of their conversations with Trump and his inner circle during the pre-Congress attack.

Among the witnesses are the staff of former Vice President Mike Pence.

It can have very serious constitutional and political consequences

The US Department of Justice has not yet indicated that it will take any action on Trump's role in the election results.

The final review does not yet mean that criminal action will be taken against Trump.

But experts say federal prosecutors bringing charges against Trump could have very serious consequences.

Attorney General Merrick Garland told NBC News that federal prosecutors "will take legal action against anyone who interferes with the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another."

Garland added that the investigation into what happened on January 6 is the largest in the history of the US Department of Justice.

January 6 Committee

The US Congress, along with the US Department of Justice, is conducting an independent review of the congressional attack.

The special commission, made up of five Democrats and two Republicans, interviewed dozens of eyewitnesses.

Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to Trump's former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, said he knew they were carrying guns when he was directing the former president's supporters to Congress.

Cassidy Hutchinson stated that despite this sage, the rally that Trump attended was not prohibited, and armed Trump supporters were allowed to attend the rally.

According to Hutchinson, Trump said, "I don't care if they're armed. They're not here to hurt me. Let my supporters in, they can apply to Congress from here."

Hutchinson's testimony revealed that Trump was aware of the potential for violence.

While commissioners say this is enough evidence to launch a formal investigation against Trump, members do not have the authority to start this process. This power rests with prosecutors.
