At my most recent cubicle job I worked on a reverse HTTP proxy. My big part of the pie was a Javascript translator: it was written originally in Perl and C++ but we migrated the Perl portion to C. The job was a lovely blend of UNIX systems development and web programming. To test my code and fix bugs I had to know Javascript and HTML cold, and be able to reverse-engineer any web page and/or reconstruct it from a few TCP dumps.
