Michigan expected to be second state to lower age requirement to serve alcohol
Lawmakers voted Tuesday in favor of a bill that would lower the age requirement to serve alcohol, Michigan Licensed Beverage Association representatives announced Wednesday
The bill, introduced by Representative Michele Hoitenga, would lower the serving age from 18 to 17.
“Currently, these servers are taking orders and bringing food out to tables, but if they aren’t 18 or older, a bartender is having to come out from behind the bar and run every drink to patrons," MLBA Executive Director Scott Ellis said.
A Lake Center Elementary School parent said a school employee told a group of fourth graders and a class of five-year-olds to be quiet during lunch, referencing the mass shooting in Uvalde that left 19 students and two adults dead
An elementary school mother, who did not want to reveal her identity for fear of retaliation, said she was upset about the incident, and the school's handling of it.
“Fourth graders, many of them didn’t know, it was confusing, scary, startling,” said the mother to News Channel 3 over the phone. “Many took it as threat, associating bad behavior with a mass shooting.”
After more than two months since the tragic death of Patrick Lyoya, the Kent County Prosecutor announced a charging decision in the case Friday.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced officer Christopher Schurr has been charged with one count of second-degree murder.
"The death was not justified," Becker said.
