A wise person once said, 'Do what you love, because you will be doing it for the rest of your life'. Back then career changes were apparently unheard of; once you settled in a job you were pretty much in it for the long haul, climbing your way to the top. So, armed with this tidbit I decided to get into the field of media. I mean, really...No one loved television as much as I did and no one I knew at 10 years old could read a book in one day – or had over 100 locked away in a suitcase (my personal travelling library). I was lucky. I had found my true love early and was set to make my mark. Joining the Mass Communications programme at Mona Campus in Jamaica in 1998 was another stroke of luck. That was the year that the CARIMAC Institute started to offer the web design module. My class was the first to explore all the wonders of the Internet and awesome programmes like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver etc. The coolest part was creating magic on the screen and seeing the dumbstruck look on our instructor's face as he realised his trainees were advancing at an astronomical pace. Needless to say when I finished in 2001, I had secured my BA degree with First Class Honours. My good fortune continued and less than four months later I was employed at the esteemed Barbados Advocate newspaper – the oldest publication in Barbados. Granted my training in print was not as advanced as my web design at the time, but nearly 14 years later I can safely say that my creative writing course paid off. I write for every publication under the umbrella of the Advocate company and presently assist in managing both the editorial department and newsroom as well. During the 14 years I also furthered my experience by completing an online Masters in Media Communication with the University of Leicester in the UK. I am driven, professional and deadline-oriented. I also enjoy what I do and you will see this in my work.
