I have been a fashion designer in Japan for about 20 years. In my final years, before retiring in 2017, I managed a department of about 20 designers. I was in charge of approving designs, overseeing production, and going abroad to various trade shows for marketing purposes. Currently, I am a freelance designer for apparel companies in Japan ranging from outerwear, lingerie, swimwear, and activewear. I travel to Los Angeles often (at least once each season), to study the current and upcoming trends as well as different fabric and technologies that are being put to use. At the same time, I look at how stores’ showcases differ based on these regions. I submit various market research reports directly to my clients back in Japan.
