About

Since the days of the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, America has been the destination where one could cast away the past and reinvent oneself anew. Kim A. Tolman’s story, like those of many other Europeans chasing their dreams to a new land, follows this classic arc.

After working in TV, film and theatre in Cologne in her native Germany, Kim set her sights on a design career in the US, relocating here in 2001.
Now based in Hollywood, the award winning production designer, art director, scenic designer, and fine art painter started off in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she designed stage productions on both the West and East Coasts from Opera San Jose to the Duke Ellington Theatre in Washington, DC.

Over the past 14 years, Kim has received several regional awards for her scenic design.

With her relocation to Los Angeles in 2011, Kim has split her time between design for themed entertainment, film, TV and theatre work. Working at Walt Disney Imagineering, she was part of the team translating James Cameron’s Avatar to Walt Disney World, Orlando.

As a production designer at NBC Universal Creative, she helped bring Harry Potter to Universal Studios Hollywood.
She’s also been involved in the design of several exciting themed entertainment projects in Dubai working with BRC Imagination Arts and Rethink Attractions.

In 2011, Kim created the stage set for pop duo The Weepies U.S. Summer Acoustic Tour and appeared as the onscreen set design expert on Yahoo! Screen series Ultimate Proposal.
She was also a contestant on Syfy's Hot Set design competition show, as well as working as production designer on three TV spots featuring pop idol Beyoncé.

In early 2015, Kim finished her assignment as art director for the Museum of the Bible, opening in Washington, DC in 2017.

Kim is currently involved as production designer on a film to be released later in 2015.

Kim is a member of United Scenic Artists (USA) Local 829 I.A.T.S.E, Themed Entertainment Association
