Writer, Educator and Former Admissions Officer

Rae Shaw is an educator, writer and filmmaker who began her journey to filmmaking with poetry. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Rae began her work in education teaching art classes at a local elementary school near campus and launched her passion for writing with her thesis book of poetry, Botany Pond. Her first jobs include working for the University of Chicago Press as an assistant copyeditor and then joining the University of Chicago Admissions Office as an admissions officer and Student Program Administrator.

Her background also includes working in the high school system as an English teacher at the Charter School of Wilmington and at the prestigious Westtown School where she worked in Admissions and alongside students as an advisor and dorm monitor. A few years later Rae embarked on her career in filmmaking and moved to Los Angeles with her MFA in Motion Picture Production from the University of Miami.

When she isn’t working on her films, she continues to provide workshops for her Poetry Discovers programs and to consult independently and for such college preparation companies as Flex College Prep where she served as an Education Consultant and College Essay Specialist for six years. The Poetry Discovers workshops focus on serving libraries and nonprofits through programs in writing, college prep, mixed media, film and women’s health.
