Britain bans Russian diamonds because of

$8/hr Starting at $25

(CNN) -- The British government announced Friday that it will ban the import of Russian diamonds, as part of its sanctions against Moscow over its war on Ukraine.

 British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's office said in a statement that imports of copper, aluminum and nickel of Russian origin would also be banned under the legislation to be introduced later this year.


 Russian diamond exports will be worth $4 billion in 2021, according to the British government.


 According to the statement, in addition to these measures, Britain intends to impose new sanctions targeting 86 people and companies from the military-industrial complex of Russian President Vladimir Putin because they "support the Kremlin in undermining the impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia."


 The British Prime Minister said that "these sanctions show that the G7 will remain united in the face of the threat from Russia, and steadfast in support of Ukraine."
