CAD Design and Modeling

$80/hr Starting at $160

I have been using Solidworks for more than 20 years. I have led small teams through larger projects but generally worked as a single designer on mechanical design of a wide variety of projects.  I worked as a machinist for a number of years right out of college and have found that hands-on experience to be valuable as a CAD designer, knowing how to make something well is very important to knowing how to design something well.

I help people take an idea or existing product, and take that idea-- a sketch, cardboard model or just a picture in someone’s head--and make it a reality.

I mainly do 3D modeling using Solidworks (if you don’t know what that is, you don’t need to; it’s a computer program), as well as some hands-on metal/plastic/wood work, and assembly as needed for prototypes.

I have been working as an independent design consultant for many years: doing multi-year contracted projects with large corporations, and working with individual inventors and craftspeople who need my skillset.

I enjoy working on all types of projects and have lately found a lot of satisfaction in helping out people who have an idea, or desire to make something, but who just don’t know how to move forward.

I am all about efficiency in design.  When dealing with a new invention I want to see the clients get their hands on their idea as quickly as practically possible.  I have seen a lot of time wasted OVER-designing things at very early stages.  There is a real art to product development.

I am able to produce 3D models, animations and renderings for presentations; detailed engineering drawings for getting parts and assemblies manufactured; and also various computer files needed for other production techniques (like 3D printing).  I also have limited in-house machine shop capabilities for producing simpler parts, and modifying and assembling of prototypes. I have a number of local machine and fabrication shops that I know well, and I have a lot of faith in them, if a client needs guidance with the next steps.

I work mostly from my home office, but I find that seeing things in person (where applicable) can really speed things up.  I often work closely with software engineers (when applicable), as I truly believe that having the mechanical side in close communication with the software and electrical sides is vital for efficient design of both the hardware and software.
