scribes aspects that are about a freelancer’s life and working conditions without a direct 

connection to their self-perception, skills or experience on Upwork.

Freelancers in TrC. mention aspects of their origin and relationship to the English lan-

guage  as native  or non-native  speakers.  Also,  more private  aspects such  as  homestay 

work or information about age and phase in life are included, e.g. as a homestay mom.

In comparison to that, the EcC. freelancers are more focused on information  regarding 

their availability or whether they work within an agency, as a team or as an independent 

freelancer. In summary, records in this cluster indicate fewer references to personal as-

pects in life than the other cluster has.

In summary, this section includes information  about freelancer themselves with differ-

ent focus  of both  clusters, one  focusing on  private information  and the  other more  on 

personal availability and working environment.   

Personal Goal      Workers bring up paragraphs of motivation and goals  they want to 

achieve during their work with clients and private goals for the relationship. First of all, 

this results in a desire for building new and satisfying existing clients. They often men-

tion a wish  for helping  employees to develop  their business  and be  part of a  project’s 

success as they want to conduct meaningful work.  

“My goal is to create, develop and grow relationships  with  my  clients  and  pro-

vide all of their web related needs.” (1111) 

Another important part of this category is the desire to learn from employees and from 

executing  different  tasks.  Developing  new  skills  and  acquiring  knowledge  is  an  im-

portant aspect to further develop one’s skill portfolio and appear personally interested in 

their work.  

“I am looking for a position that will [..] provide me with  new  learning  experi-

ences and an ability to grow.” (449)
