Developmental editing is a more intensive edit than copyediting and it is highly needed for fiction books. This type of editing looks at the overall plot of the book as well as character development, timeline, etc. However, I do a deeper dive into each chapter to figure out what’s working, what’s not, and how you should fix it. This includes:
Pacing
Narrative voice
Areas that need expansion or condensing
Story flow
And of course, plot holes, character development, timeline, genre matching, inconsistencies, and specific areas you’re worried about.
I developmental edit young adult fiction (all genres except horror) and adult romance books. I do not do the final copyediting/proofreading, which comes after developmental editing.
The process:
Comments are made in track changes of a manuscript with a PDF editorial analysis of the book for your review
Once you review the editorial analysis and my comments, we’ll have a discussion about the manuscript and any editorial suggestions
You will then implement any editorial changes into the manuscript and I will do a final review of the book with a second editorial analysis to provide final thoughts.
