Developmental Editing for Fiction Books

$30/hr Starting at $1K

This listing is for books that have a word count less than 75,000 words. If your book is over 75,000, please see my other listing. Developmental editing is a more intensive edit than copyediting and it is highly needed for fiction books. This type of editing looks at the overall plot of the book as well as character development, timeline, etc. However, I do a deeper dive into each chapter to figure out what’s working, what’s not, and how you should fix it. This includes:

  • Pacing

  • Narrative voice

  • Areas that need expansion or condensing

  • Story flow

  • And of course, plot holes, character development, timeline, genre matching, inconsistencies, and specific areas you’re worried about.

I developmental edit young adult fiction (all genres except horror) and adult romance books. I do not do the final copyediting/proofreading, which comes after developmental editing.

The process:

  • Comments are made in track changes of a manuscript with a PDF editorial analysis of the book for your review

  • Once you review the editorial analysis and my comments, we’ll have a discussion about the manuscript and any editorial suggestions

  • You will then implement any editorial changes into the manuscript and I will do a final review of the book with a second editorial analysis to provide final thoughts.
