Months after the Handy Stop closed,

$25/hr Starting at $25

Only a few months after the Handy Stop closed, the store's owners are opening a new grocery store in the heart of Downtown Lafayette, they announced Monday.

The store, called Amis Grocery, will be at the former Poupart's space in the Gordon Square building at 100 E. Vermilion St., according to a Facebook post. The store is expected to open in July.

"Your neighborhood grocery is back," the Facebook post said. "Amis Grocery is Bradley [Cruice] and Rachel [Brown]’s new endeavor bringing local, healthier food options to downtown again. Amis Grocery will be offering your favorite lunches, spirits, and groceries at a location convenient to you."

When Handy Stop closed in February, the Downtown Lafayette area was left without a grocery store. Opened in 2020, the store at 444 Jefferson St.quickly became a favorite among the downtown community.

The Handy Stop closed after the building it leased was sold, the store said in a February Facebook post. The building was bought by ACTP Rentals for $1.1 million in February, according to documents from the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court.

The Louisiana Secretary of State's office lists Cliff Guidry as the manager of ACTP Rentals. Guidry, who runs Guidry Land Development, has overseen several residential developments in Acadiana and was the developer behind plans for the tallest structure in Lafayette's history.
