Power Electronics Engineering and SMPS

$50/hr Starting at $250

Hi there!

My name is Sierra and I'm looking for electrical engineering work. My degree is a BS in EE with an emphasis in control loop design. I have extensive experience in power electronics design, RF, PCB layout, and EMC compliance.

I've been in this field for about 15 years. I'm based in the US and am a native English speaker. I meet with clients on Discord and Zoom primarily and can voice and video chat with you if needed as well. I'm happy to design parts of a product for you, do prototyping to test out the feasibility of an idea, or just discuss how to solve a problem you encountered with your project.

The following descriptions of my experience mention the most advanced work I have done in these fields. If you have a simpler project I can likely help as well. I'll be able to help you blink a light, connect a display to a microcontroller, make a programmable lighting controller, build a line following robot, build a hoverboard, etc. No one has yet hired me to build a BattleBot but that sure would be fun...

General:
PCB design, schematic capture, microcontrollers, Arduino, SMD soldering, design for manufacture, displays, touch screens, blue tooth and BLE, android software.
I know enough C, C++, and Java to get by. I prefer to write in C. I prefer to do hardware design mainly.
Amplifier design for audio and high speed instrumentation applications.
Transimpedance amplifier design for high speed sensor applications.
Lumped and active filter design.
Finite element method magnetics design for inductors and electromagnets.
Heatsink and chassis design for heat dissipation.

Power:
Switching power supply design. Resonant, full bridge, forward, flyback, LLC, PSFB, ZVS/ZCS, buck, boost, etc. Any topology you need.
Design of power supplies that deliver up to 2000A for short periods of time for pulsed welding applications.
Power factor correction (PFC) design.
Motor driver design. VFD design.
Inverter design. Sine wave synthesis with <3% THD into highly nonlinear loads possible.
Hysteretic voltage and current mode control design.
Deadbeat current mode control design in DSP control loops. DSPic based control loops.
PID control loops.
"Classical" Voltage and current mode control loop design for "analog" switching power supplies.
Digital control loop compensation. DSP firmware design for switching power supplies, inverters, and motor controllers.
Transformer and inductor design. Ferrite, powered iron, laminated steel/iron cores.
Experience with MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC, GaN transistors, etc.
Experience fixing "OMG it keeps exploding!!!" problems.
PCB design for power electronics. Loop size reduction, optimization of paracitics for high efficiency in switching power supplies and inverters.
Tesla coil design (just for fun!). SSTC, DRSSTC, QCW, etc.
Battery chargers and balancing circuits.
Heat dissipation design for pulsed semiconductor applications. Transient thermal impedance calculation and parts selection.
UL and CE safety including clearance and creepage requirements.
