If a manuscript is not yet ready for copy editing due to issues of excessively poor grammar, faulty organization, or sub-par translation, or if the manuscript contains heavy instances of awkward writing, general wordiness, or repetition, it may need to be rewritten. Authors whose passion overrides their writing skills, authors who wrote their work in haste, and ESL authors may especially benefit from a professional rewriting. Rewriting entails reshaping all or part of a manuscript to bring forward its core ideas and intent, and to clean up language in the technical sense. Rewriting is different than conceptual editing in that the editor is rewriting only, and therefore not looking for issues related to manuscript development; rewriting is different from a copy editor's grammatical work because copy editors address more minor instances of grammatical incorrectness.
