A conceptual editor works closely with an author to develop a manuscript until it is ready for copy editing. In conceptual editing, an editor considers a manuscript's intended use as well as its content, style, organization, (etc.). This type of editing is analysis-based; conceptual editors use our experience and best judgment to strengthen the overall piece. This may include heavy editing, insertion/deletion of material, or a complete rewriting a part of the manuscript---all while preserving the author's voice and tone.
In fiction, a conceptual editor reads a manuscript with an eye towards character development, plot consistency, story arc, (etc.), and works with the author to strengthen weaker points; in nonfiction, a conceptual editor provides similar services, designed to strengthen the overall piece.
