Western officials had previously considered Ukraine taking Crimea by force impossible but that has changed since Vladimir Putin acknowledged battle setbacks for the first time and Ukraine undertook a successful counter-offensive to recapture some areas of Luhansk. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, and would likely see any attempt to recapture it as a major escalation of the war. One US official told The Telegraph: "It is clear that Russia no longer has the ability or willpower to defend key positions, and if the Ukrainians succeed in their goal of recapturing Kherson, then there is a very real possibility that it will ultimately be able to recapture Crimea."
