I’m Garrett Maring — an AI engineer, product designer, and founder of Music Maketh and Engi. I design and build intelligent systems that have to work in the real world: production environments, complex data, human-critical workflows, and creative tools where taste matters as much as technology.
My background spans world-class software engineering and serious creative practice (classical cello, composition, design). That mix shows up in my work: I care about robustness and scale, but I refuse to ship products that don’t feel good to use.
Industry Experience
Apple — App Store & iTunes
I built internal platforms used by App Review, Editorial, and partner teams to ship higher-quality apps faster. Highlights: autonomous review systems that deployed apps to real device farms and explored them without human input; workflow tools that made complex review processes more observable, repeatable, and far less manual; and an instant-experience prototype that helped inform what later became App Clips. This was engineering at global scale: enormous throughput, strict quality bars, and zero tolerance for brittle UX.
Kernel — Neurotechnology R&D & Clinical Software
At Kernel Neurotechnology, I was the hands-on lead engineer for the primary R&D platform — a real-time, websocket-driven system for developing next-generation neurotech hardware. I designed live dashboards and data tools that turned noisy signals into clear visuals, and I helped ship clinical software tied to Kernel’s first device. When the software failed, experiments stopped, so reliability and clarity were non-negotiable.
AirCam — Real-Time Event Photo Platform
As founding developer at AirCam, I owned the attendee-facing mobile web experience for live event photo sharing. The challenge: one photographer, hundreds of viewers, crowded venues, bad networks. I built a real-time, media-heavy experience that felt native in the browser, tuned for speed, resilience, and delight under chaotic conditions.

Engi is my open-source exploration into AI-native software engineering: agents that can plan, execute, and verify engineering work, grounded in objective measurement and real-world constraints (repos, environments, CI/CD, deployments).
Music Maketh — Musical Intelligence
Music Maketh [Mind] is a research and product studio exploring “Musical Intelligence”: using music and art as training signal and interface to build AI that is more curious, creative, and humane. We’re building creative companions, tools, and learning experiences shaped by neuromusicology, alignment research, and the expressive richness of sound.
How I Build
I approach software like composition: structure, tone, rhythm, and dynamics all matter. I’m at my best when the problem is complex, the stakes are high, and the product has to be both technically strong and emotionally compelling.
