Hi, my name is Penny and I have 38-years experience writing & editing in American or British English & Assoc. Press, with 100 percent feedback on Guru since 2003.

AS A BOOK EDITOR: I worked for Amazon’s first publishing division, BookSurge, in the 1990s, doing the final book edits in both American and British English, Chicago style, the publishing industry standard. I also wrote marketing letters and back jackets. I have had my own editing business online since 2003 at and have testimonials from clients all over the world who write in many genres. I have 100 percent "thumbs up" rating both here, and on my website, where my services have been listed more than 20 years. I do developmental and copy editing, but specialize in line-editing (looking at each word and perfecting the manuscript doing any and all changes that may be needed.)

MY EXPERIENCE AS AN AUTHOR & JOURNALIST for 38+ years gives me an understanding and kinship with other authors and almost automatic respect for their ability to put words on a page. I started as a reporter many years ago and worked my way up to Managing Editor at Sunbelt Newspapers in Tampa Bay, Florida, and held the position of both outdoor feature writer and columnist for The Tampa Tribune. I also wrote for several community newspapers and the media giant, Media General Communications Inc., and five national magazines.

AS AN AUTHOR: Over the years I have been both traditionally and self-published and have written books in four genres, several books for small publishers that are now out of business leaving those books in limbo as I redo them. But I have four on Amazon and several eBook sites and on my website now.

Work Terms

I charge strictly by word count (not hourly) for manuscripts 5,000 words and more. It's $50 for each 5,000 words. I consider anything 5,000 words or more a manuscript. This way book authors can figure their costs before hiring me. Shorter works (stories, magazine articles, and documents) are charged at $30 an hour. I leave lots of notes in the margins to explain why I do certain things so you’ll know in the future. I edit only in Word files, using Track Changes. You get two colors back, one for suggested additions and another for deletions. This way, you OK each change individually─ and tell me if you want something put back the way it was originally. After you go through the marked-up version and I make whatever changes you ask for, I send you a black copy, where spelling, spacing and punctuation have also been checked. Just put your words count in and follow this easy formulka and you'll know what you're spending before we start! 10,000 (words)= $50 x 2=$100. An 80K manuscript is 80,000 divided by 5,000=16. 16X $50= $800. Everything is in writing in a Guru agreement before we start so no one is ever disappointed.
