Specialising in the design, development and delivery of solutions based on Microsoft Excel and Power BI.
I am a freelance developer providing Microsoft Excel, VBA, Power Pivot and Power BI solutions to businesses of any size, location or sector. I am particularly interested in bringing the power and flexibility of Excel to smaller companies, start-ups and entrepreneurs: those who most need the high quality, low cost, bespoke solutions that I can deliver. My particular strengths are in measurement, reporting and dashboard design.
After gaining a degree in Engineering from Cambridge University I worked in IT for over 30 years, the last 19 with Accenture, one of the world’s leading IT consulting firms. Tiring of the corporate world I took the decision in 2016 to set up on my own, doing what I enjoyed most: Excel development. Working for myself gives me the flexibility to work when and where I want, and a great variety of work for clients who really appreciate what I do.
The Excel solutions I provide are specific to each client’s needs. From automating repetitive tasks, data validation or consolidating csv files, to complex modelling, interactive dashboards or statistical analysis, the capabilities of Excel with VBA and Power Pivot are almost limitless.
Microsoft Power BI emerged in 2016 as a real force in cloud-based data analytics and visualisation. Self-service analytics is one of the game changers that will transform the way businesses of all sizes manage and operate in future. There’s a large overlap between Power BI and Excel for those of us familiar with Power Pivot and Power Query, and I anticipate working more in this area as awareness of it grows.
My particular speciality is measurement, reporting and dashboards, either in Excel or Power BI. I believe in simple, clean design that meets the primary objective of a dashboard: clear communication. I am in the school of Edward Tufte and Stephen Few.
Work Terms
My background in consulting means that I am well-used to delivering to tight deadlines without compromising on quality. It also means that I believe in up front planning and design as much as possible: years of experience has taught me that it saves time in the long run.
I try to stick to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week to maintain my work/life balance. When the project demands – and because I can get totally engrossed in an interesting challenge – I will work above and beyond to get the job done.
If the project is less than 5 days I ask for payment at the end when the solution has been accepted. If more than 5 days then I ask for weekly payment or by milestone, whichever is most appropriate.
Either way, payment plans need to be agreed up front before work starts.
