We have observed and learned about the rise and demise of countless companies including ones we have been personally involved with. A key pattern that seems to be surfacing over and over again is the confusion of effectiveness (what and why to do it) and efficiency (how to do it). Many teams are great at identifying what to do but don’t have the resources to execute well, others execute fantastically but are heading down an ill-defined lane.

Frequently, multiple insiders recognize these issues but hesitate to raise alarms or struggle to convince stakeholders to take action. Often, discussions about necessary changes occur, and while everyone agrees, little action follows. In some cases, a false sense of security prevails, with groupthink masking underlying problems. Other situations may appear unresolvable, often stemming from a lack of awareness about the underlying root causes of the issues.
