Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Legal Subject Matter Expert (SME) with 10+ years of professional legal experience to support an advanced research and engineering initiative.

The SME will provide legal expertise, evaluate research outputs, interpret complex legal information, and collaborate with multidisciplinary research and engineering teams.

Location: Mountain View, CA / Silicon Valley
Work Arrangement: Onsite 2 days per week
Engagement Type: 1099 Independent Contractor
Duration: 6 months
Weekly Commitment: 35 hours/week
Rate: USD $90–$120/hour
Experience: 10+ years

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with research and engineering teams to provide legal domain expertise.
  • Review and evaluate research outputs for legal accuracy, relevance, and completeness.
  • Analyze and interpret complex legal documents, regulations, statutes, and case-related information.
  • Review and synthesize information from legal and regulatory sources.
  • Identify legal inconsistencies, gaps, assumptions, and potential risks.
  • Provide expert recommendations to improve research quality and accuracy.
  • Support development and refinement of research methodologies involving legal content.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders on complex legal research questions.
  • Document findings, legal reasoning, assumptions, and recommendations clearly.
  • Stay current with relevant legal and regulatory developments.

Required Qualifications

  • JD, LLB, LLM, or equivalent legal qualification.
  • 10+ years of professional legal experience.
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and interpretation skills.
  • Experience interpreting complex legal documents and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with research, engineering, and cross-functional teams.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Mountain View, CA 2 days per week.

Preferred Background

Candidates may come from Corporate Law, Commercial Law, Regulatory Law, Litigation, Contract Law, Compliance, Intellectual Property, Employment Law, Privacy/Data Law, or other specialized legal domains.

AI/ML experience is not mandatory.
