Job Title: Natural History Specimen Broker / Acquisition Consultant

Job Summary The Specimen Acquisition Consultant serves as the critical bridge between private discoverers, institutional museums, and high-net-worth research collectors. This role is responsible for the ethical sourcing, scientific validation, and high-value placement of rare geological and biological specimens. The primary focus is transforming "raw finds" into defensible, institutional-grade assets through rigorous documentation and market positioning. We are looking for a broker with a background in economic geology. They don't just sell the stone; they sell the scientific data and the prestige of discovery that the stone represents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provenance & Scientific Validation: Conduct deep-dive research into the discovery history of specimens. Verify that the asset meets IMA (International Mineralogical Association) standards or USGS rarity profiles.

  • Institutional Placement: Act as the lead negotiator with university labs, museum curators, and research foundations to facilitate the sale or "grant-anchor" donation of specimens.

  • Valuation Strategy: Utilize USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) to benchmark specimens against world-class geological "Holotypes" (e.g., comparing the specimen find to iconic specimens like the Alma King Rhodochrosite).

  • Compliance & Ethics Oversight: Ensure all transfers comply with international laws (such as the Cultural Property Export and Import Act) and maintain a "clean" chain of custody.

  • Strategic Marketing: Package scientific rarity data into high-impact "Investment Narratives" for private collectors who view mineral specimens as "Natural Art."

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Expertise in Mineralogy/Geology: A deep understanding of M-UMR (Mafic-Ultramafic Rock) environments and the chemistry of rare mineral assemblages.

  • Fiduciary Literacy: Knowledge of how Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) and institutional trustees handle illiquid non-cash assets.

  • Grant Funding Knowledge: Familiarity with how research institutions utilize NSF (National Science Foundation) or private grants to acquire unique scientific material.

  • High-Stakes Negotiation: Experience in 7-to-8 figure transactions within the alternative asset or fine art markets.
