I have honed my skills as a copywriter, working for brands as disparate as Groupon and Best New Bands. At both institutions, I was required to write and disseminate content via traditional website-based platforms, as well as digestible content for newsletters and social media. Groupon particularly was brand and client-based: in addition to the particular pun-heavy copywriting style necessary for publication, each deal had to be written with the deal-maker in mind. Juggling these styles and salient sale points while tailoring language to the medium in which it was released (eg Twitter, email blast, or for SEO purposes) was an important step in my development as a writer. I used these skills to transfer to writing album and band reviews at Best New Bands, which allowed me to use more of my creative skills in both writing my own and editing others’ pieces. While it was up to my discretion as to how to review individual performances, albums, or singles, press releases and features were heavily influenced by labels and artists. The experience of tying creativity to brand identity throughout both positions has not only made me a better writer, but a better creator.
