Tottenham Hotspur have been given the green light to secure the signing of Djed Spence…
What’s the word?
That is according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, who delivered a fresh update to GIVEMESPORT this week, where he claimed:
“Spence has wanted to join Spurs for a while now, it was just down to [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy and [Middlesbrough owner] Steve Gibson negotiating.
“Steve Gibson wanted a lot more than what Tottenham were offering, but they’ve come to a resolution [over the fee] now.”
Some reports had suggested that the Lilywhites were some way off the 21-year-old’s asking price but it now appears as if he could well become Antonio Conte’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window, joining Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison in north London.
Green light to move
This will be music to the ears of the Italian head coach, given his obvious desperation to sign a new right wing-back. Ever since he arrived in the dugout back in November, it’s been clear that he’s unconvinced by his current options.
Ahead of the January transfer window, The Times reported that the Spurs boss was keen to sign Adama Traore from Wolves in a bid to resolve his problems in the role, with the report citing that he wasn’t impressed by 2021 summer signing Emerson Royal and his capability in the final third.
There wasn’t much said about Matt Doherty but he has very much been on the periphery ever since arriving from the Old Gold himself, and he ended the campaign injured.
Indeed, the 30-year-old has only started 22 top-flight matches, some ten fewer than what he managed in his final season with the Midlands outfit.
Spence is an exciting young talent who impressed during a loan stint at Nottingham Forest, who went on to win the playoffs. He played a huge part in that success.
Having made 41 appearances, the Boro loanee registered six goal contributions and averaged 1.8 dribbles, 1.6 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and one key pass per game, via WhoScored, thus proving his credentials at either end of the pitch.
He was part of the side that knocked Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal out of the FA Cup, too, and his performance that day left Gunners legend Ian Wright in awe.
“I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time,” he revealed on his own podcast. “I said to him afterwards, ‘whatever’s happening, whatever you’re doing, the level you’ve just shown us here is the level you have to be consistently hitting, Djed.'”
Also dubbed “talented” by football.london reporter Alasdair Gold and “incredible” by The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor, it’s clear that Spurs would be getting quite the upgrade on the right flank and ultimately, that’ll leave Conte a very happy man heading into the new season.
He needs strength in depth and Spence does that and more to the right wing-back role.
