I have spent the past 13 years of my career in the Healthcare IT space with a focus on clinical systems interoperability. During this period, I served as the lead developer and project manager for the development and implementation of a comprehensive practice management system serving a physicians group which managed and staffed the Emergency Departments at four hospitals located in the middle TN and southern KY regions. A significant part of this effort involved integrating the disparate EMR system used at these hospitals with the physician's group’s corporate data warehouse. These EMR systems included McKesson, MediTech and Cerner.
To achieve these integrations, my team developed backend applications and APIs that enabled the receipt, normalization and loading of hundreds of thousands of HL7 messages and their related data segments in near real time. These inbound HL7 messages served the internal coding/billing, provider reimbursement and patient care audit workflows. We also developed software to allow physicians and mid-level providers to define “aggregations” of both environmental and clinical markers derived from the HL7 resulting in near real-time SMS alerts giving the providers a heads up to potential severe patient conditions such as sepsis.
