Following a meticulously prepared ceremony, the final act of the "Funeral of the Century" comes down today, as the late Queen Elizabeth rests at her husband's side.

The Royal Vault is a burial chamber deep in the altar of St George's Chapel, within the grounds of Windsor Castle. The vault is about 16 feet (five meters) underground.

Although Prince Philip, who died on April 9, 2021, is buried in the Royal Vault, his remains will be moved to the Royal Vault to join his late wife, before the Royal Vault is closed again.

As Edward VI, George V and Queen Elizabeth's father George VI were originally buried in the Royal Vault below the chapel, built by George III between 1804 and 1810, their remains were later moved to the specially built annex in a chapel - called the Basilica. King George VI Memorial - in 1969.

Besides the Duke of Edinburgh, there are currently 24 royals buried in the Royal Vault and these include Prince Edward, father of Queen Victoria, two of George III's children Prince Alfred and Prince Octavius, and Queen Mary's mother, Princess Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck.
