Three police officers were slain in a Nigerian police station attack.
In the southeast Nigerian state of Ebonyi, a police station was attacked, resulting in the deaths of three police officers.
Province of Ebonyi '#0' target='_blank' Gunmen opened fire on the Oshiri district police station in the province, according to a statement from police spokesperson Onome Onovwakpoyeya.
AA reported that Onovwakpoyeya stated, "Unfortunately, three police officers perished in the incident. One got hurt and is already receiving medical attention at the hospital," it said.
Onovwakpoyeya claimed that two assailants were killed in the operation conducted by the security forces. Several attackers escaped with injuries. He also noted that more security troops were dispatched to the area following the incident.
In southern Nigeria, these attacks are occasionally carried out by the terrorist group Biafra Indigenous Peoples (IPOB). However, no one has yet claimed credit for the attack.
The Biafran people rose up in 1967 to demand the creation of an independent state of Biafra in the southern part of Nigeria, which led to the outbreak of a civil war that claimed millions of lives.
