Japan: Launch of the G7 Leaders' Summit

Today marked the official start of the three-day G7 Leaders' Summit in Hiroshima, which is hosting it for the duration of Japan's presidency.

OFFICIAL CEREMONY STARTED

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, US Vice President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Charles Michel, and European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are also present. Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, and the other G7 leaders went on a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on the first day of the summit to see the relics related to the 1945 atomic bombing disaster. Following their visit, the leaders placed wreaths at the atomic bomb victims' mausoleum.

Following Barack Obama's visit to Hiroshima in 2016, US President Joe Biden's visit today was noted as the second visit by an in-office US president to the city.

Global security issues, including the Russian invasion attempt against Ukraine, North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, China's expanding military presence in the region, as well as issues relating to the global economy and technology, will be discussed at the G7 Leaders' Summit, which will last until Sunday.
