Mum and four children jump fence to escape an alleged knifeman as cops SHOOT him on the street of an affluent suburb after he 'lunged at them'

A mother and her four children jumped a fence into a neighbour's property to escape as the woman's husband was shot twice by police following an alleged domestic violence incident on Sunday night.

The woman had locked her 43-year-old husband in the garage of their home at Liquidambar Place, in the affluent Brisbane suburb of Stretton, with one of the carport doors open, police said.

Some of the couple's sons - aged seven, nine, 12 and 14 - were hiding in bushes at the home when police arrived.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said there had been 'a rapidly evolving domestic situation' in the lead-up to the shooting, about 7.30pm.

He said the father then sprinted down the driveway armed with a large metal sharpening file towards a senior constable.

The officer shot the man in the hip but he allegedly lunged at the officer who shot him in the shoulder before the man threw the file at him.

The man is in a serious but stable condition in Princess Alexandra Hospital and due to undergo surgery later on Monday.

The woman and her four sons had jumped the fence into the neighbour's property to seek refuge.

'I could see that they were really scared so I let them in,' the neighbour told the Courier Mail.

The neighbour said the police were already on the scene when the family, who have lived in the street for a few years, got to her house.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the shooting, with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Det Supt Massingham said police had not been called to the home before and there was no record of domestic violence or mental health history linked to the family.

'The only option the police were left with was lethal use of force,' he said on Monday.

'At the time that they saw an armed man, and approaching very rapidly down a hilly driveway, that is their thought process.'

The wife and sons are staying elsewhere.

'This is indeed a tragedy for everybody involved the family, the neighbours and of course our responding police,' Det Supt Massingham said.

The incident came after another police shooting on Sunday, when officers went to a home in Bellagio Crescent, Coomera, on the Gold Coast to conduct a welfare check at about 3.20pm.

A 29-year-old man, identified as Joshua John Kleeman, 29, was allegedly allegedly threatened police armed with a knife.

He was asked to put down the knife several times before rushing at officers and was shot, police said.

He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition and was expected to undergo surgery.

The incident is also being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command

The matter has occurred in relation to a call for assistance in relation to his potential mental health concerns and on arrival here he has confronted police with a knife and they have had to take actions to defend themselves,' said Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith.
