NFL investigation

$30/hr Starting at $25

NEW YORK (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY), ALBANY Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, and Rob Bonta, the attorney general of California, both indicated on May 4 that they would be looking into the NFL.

James and Bonta will look into claims made by former workers about the league's work environment as well as any violations of anti-discrimination and pay equity rules. The league has received subpoenas from both attorneys demanding pertinent information.

James stated in a statement that "no one should ever have to experience harassment, discrimination, or abuse in the workplace." No institution, no matter how strong or significant, is above the law, and we'll make sure the NFL is held responsible.

James has pursued the NFL in the past as well. James, along with five other attorneys general, wrote a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in April of last year requesting that the league investigate claims of employment inequality.

The New York Times reported in February 2022 that more than 30 former female employees claimed they were subjected to discrimination and retaliation as a result of making complaints to the league's human resources division. A former female manager recently sued the league in Los Angeles, citing age and sex discrimination in addition to gender discrimination.

Additionally, the league was questioned by the Congressional Committee on Oversight and Reform last year regarding allegations of improper behavior by a team owner.

James and Bonta will each ask the NFL for information involving claims of salary inequality, harassment, and racial and gender discrimination.
