More than 800 inmates reportedly escaped during a raid on Kakwangura Prison by an armed group in North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It was reported that Kakwangura Prison in the city of Butembo in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was raided at midnight by an unidentified armed group and more than 800 prisoners escaped.

Antony Mwalushayi, spokesman for the operations carried out by the Democratic Republic of Congo army against armed groups, stated that 2 police officers and 1 civilian lost their lives in the attack on the prison, and that a part of the prison was damaged. Mwalushayi stated that the armed group was heavily armed and consisted of about 80 people and said, "They managed to enter the prison and release all the prisoners."

Expressing that the attackers started the attack based on the knowledge that the female prisoners would be transferred from Beni to Butembo, Mwalushayi stated that he was confident that the separatist armed organization Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has been operating in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo since 1990, was behind the attack.
