$30/hr Starting at $25

After five years, diplomatic ties between Canada and Saudi Arabia have been restored.

Diplomatic ties between Canada and Saudi Arabia, which were severed in 2018, have been determined to be repaired.

The two nations resolved to appoint mutual ambassadors, according to a statement on Global Affairs Canada's (GAC) website, which posts official notifications from Canada.

In the announcement, it was mentioned that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a meeting to resolve the matter with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on November 18, 2022, outside of the APEC conference in Bangkok.

According to the statement, it was decided to restore these connections to their previous level after both parties expressed a desire to re-establish diplomatic ties on the basis of respect for one another and shared interests.

According to a post made on the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' social media page, the two nations' diplomatic ties have been restored to where they were five years ago.

HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS HAVE BROKEN CANADA-SAUDI ARABIA RELATIONS

As a result of the Trudeau government's official social media statements criticizing Saudi Arabia for its human rights abuses, relations between the two countries were in disarray.

The issue began at the same time as Canada withdrew its ambassador, reaching its height when the Saudi government requested the Canadian ambassador leave the country in August 2018.

After US journalist Jamal Khashoggi died in Saudi Arabia in October 2018, the diplomatic crisis between Canada and Saudi Arabia grew worse.

Following the severing of diplomatic ties, trade between the two nations ceased as well, and Saudi Airlines halted all of its flights to Canada.

During the crisis, the Trudeau administration temporarily halted the sale of armored vehicles and weapons, which is known as Canada's largest export of military hardware abroad. However, it was agreed to resume exports in exceptional circumstances.
