Spain: polls shows first far-right group

Prior to Spain's upcoming snap general elections on July 23, surveys suggest that the far right may become a coalition member for the first time in the nation's democratic history.

After the initial separatist attempts in the Catalonia region, the far-right Vox party, which has only existed in Spain for ten years, began to play a significant role in national politics as a result of the economic issues brought on by the Kovid-19 outbreak and the Russia-Ukraine War.

Finally, Vox doubled its vote share nationwide (from 3.52 percent to 7 percent) in the context of municipalities following the local elections held on May 28 and rose to third place, and the number of representatives it sent to local governments exceeded 500. Raised it to 1700.

The People's Party (PP), the largest right-wing party in the country and currently the main opposition party in the parliament, had to cooperate with Vox in the Castilla y Leon self-government government for the first time in 2022 and in the coalition government of Valencia after the last local elections.

Having gained a great victory in local elections, the PP, however, reached an arrangement with Vox in other autonomous administrations, such as the Balearic Islands, Murcia, Extremadura, and many towns, where it could not obtain a sufficient majority.

Polls reveal that PP-Vox cooperation, which begun in local governments, may potentially effect a future coalition government after the early federal elections on 23 July.

"It is very likely that there will be a political change in Spain.

"PP head Alberto Nunez Feijoo claimed that his party aspires to be in power alone and does not want to create a coalition with Vox.

Feijoo told the Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), the major partner of the current coalition government, which has the toughest stance on the extreme right, "If you don't want Vox to be the ruling partner, if PP is the party with the most votes in the elections, we would abstain and let us rule alone."

"It is very likely that there will be a political change in Spain," the PP leader told a group of international journalists in Madrid, including the Anadolu Agency (AA) representative, for July 23. gave the message.

Defining his personal political identification as a "convinced constitutionalist", Feijoo added, "I want to rule Spain without Vox, but if the PSOE blocks it, I have to look for a solution." He did not close the door to the radical right.

Vox leader Santiago Abascal, on the other hand, maintains that his party "will be decisive" in the general elections, continuously highlighting that a possible support for the PP will be in the form of a coalition partner, not from outside, according to the election results.
