Sudan: Violation of the cease-fire

$30/hr Starting at $25

Conflict parties in Sudan accuse one another of breaking a truce.

The army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (HDK), who have been at odds in Sudan since mid-April, have each accused the other of breaking the ceasefire, which was supposed to last for one week starting two days ago.

On the second day, the parties broke the cease-fire that had been declared in Jeddah under the intervention of the USA and Saudi Arabia.

There were violent skirmishes in the city center of Khartoum, in Bahri to the north, and in Umdurman to the west.

The HDK violated the one-week ceasefire declared as of May 22. It attacked the cities of Al-Juneyna and Zalince on the border with Chad in the west, continued the siege of the city of Al-Ubayd in the south, and continued the occupation of the hospitals, the last of which is the Ahmed Kasm Hospital in the capital Khartoum.

In the statement, it was claimed that on Tuesday, HDK raided the capital's mint and attacked the Vadi Seyyidina military airbase.

The army broke the truce at many spots, according to the HDK statement, by targeting airplanes, firing artillery, and striking on land.

The invasion by the army on Gabe Street in the capital Khartoum was reportedly repulsed, and three tanks were taken, according to the statement that claimed the right of self-defense was exercised.

The statement used phrases like "Airplanes attacked our forces' positions in Khartoum in Omdurman, west of the capital, and a Mig-type aircraft was shot down."

Following HDK anti-aircraft fire in Umdurman, west of the capital, the army Mig type fighter plane caught fire, and the two pilots were ejected from the aircraft using parachute systems, according to pictures posted on social media.

In the footage, it is reflected in the cameras that one of the pilots managed to land in the area under the control of the soldier, but the other pilot was injured and passed into the hands of HDK.

short-term ceasefire

With the assistance of the international community, the parties declared a cease-fire on May 20 that would take effect at 21:45 on May 22.

Saudi Arabia and the United States had stated that the talks held in Jeddah would continue to resolve the crisis between the army and the NGO, which had clashed in Sudan.

The short-term cease-fire agreement includes the parties' adherence to the humanitarian duties stated in the Jeddah Declaration. It intends to "deliver emergency humanitarian aid and provide basic services" to be implemented throughout Sudan.
