Quarter of a million people filed past Queen Elizabeth’s coffin in London
Around a quarter of a million people paid their respects in person to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth by viewing her coffin as it lay in state in London. UK Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan gave the figure the morning after the country’s longest-reigning monarch was buried at Windsor Castle. Ms Donelan said her department was still “crunching the numbers” as to how many people had queued for hours in London to process past the queen’s coffin at Westminster Hall, but that she believed they numbered around 250,000. 

Pension system overhaul: People who work until they are 70 to get an increased payment of €315
People who work until they are 70 will receive a weekly State pension of €315 under a radical overhaul of the pension system. The Government is introducing five new rates of pension payments based on when a person retires from the workforce, which will see rates rise incrementally by 5pc for every year a person remains in work. Those who leave work at 66 will continue to be entitled to the current weekly rate of €253 a week but anyone who remains in work longer will get a higher payment. The move is aimed at ending the political stalemate over increasing the pension age to 67.

National Ploughing Championships back after Covid break
All roads lead to Ratheniska, Co Laois, as the National Ploughing Championships get under way for the first time since 2019. A veritable tented city has been constructed on the 900-acre site over recent weeks, with 1,700 trade stands fully stocked and staffed, along the site’s 37km of trackway. Ploughing competitions, trade stands, livestock, food and fashion all feature in this year’s event. Mainly dry weather is forecast and 300,000 people are expected through the gates over the three days of the event.

Condemnation as Garda car rammed twice in ‘terrifying’ Dublin incident
Garda representatives and politicians have strongly condemned an incident in which a vehicle collided with a Garda car in Dublin yesterday evening. The incident occurred at around 7.30pm, after Gardaí responded to an incident of dangerous driving in the Cherry Orchard area of Ballyfermot. According to a Garda spokesperson, Gardaí saw two vehicles driving “erratically” with both failing to stop when requested.
“Both vehicles failed to stop when requested to do so by Gardaí and one vehicle collided with an official Garda vehicle,” said the spokesperson. Dramatic video footage of the incident has been widely shared on social media. It shows two cars driving at high speeds and performing hand brake turns in a residential area while a small crowd of young people watch and cheer.
